Kang Seungyoon’s Profile

Seungyoon’s first round of audition for Superstar K2 is so memorable: A 16-year old school outcast, relayed his many dreams and hopes with just a guitar in hand and a heartfelt cover of Jonathan Meyers’s ‘This Time‘ ~Tonight the sky above… I’ve been sitting, watching life pass from the sidelines… been waiting for a dream to seep in through my blinds~ He believed he was destined to be a star and he made that dream a reality by working tirelessly, belying all expectations by placing 4th on the show and then hitting it big with Instinctively! The rocker boy had become a household name with brands, events and entertainment agencies vying to sign him up.

It is remarkable that at this point, when he had big splashy debut opportunities, he chose to join YG as a trainee. He felt he needed to train & hone his skills. 2.5 years later, he would debut with the all-kill hit ‘It Rains‘, followed by the release of ‘Wild & Young‘ on July 31, 2016, which was promoted on various broadcast stations. Two weeks later he released ‘Stealer‘, the last of his solo activities for the time and turned his focus towards WINNER.

After 14 months of hiatus, on April 4, 2017, WINNER made a comeback with a completely new, fresh and youthful concept in the album – FATE NUMBER FOR which was a runaway hit. The title track ‘Really Really‘ even set a record by surpassing 100 million streams while charting-in! Needless to say, the reformed WINNER was back in action. They followed it up with more hit albums spanning various genres: OUR TWENTY FOR (2017), EVERYD4Y (2018), MILLIONS (2018), WE (2019) and CROSS (2019). In 2020, the older members of the group – Kim Jinwoo & Lee Seunghoon enlisted for mandatory military service. The album REMEMBER marked their last release before hiatus until all four members return after completing their mandatory enlistment & WINNER begins it’s next chapter!

WINNER is an important identity for Seungyoon. He has often shared how much the group & members mean to him, calling them brothers/family many a times.

Seungyoon made his acting debut with the popular TV sitcom High Kick: Revenge of the Short-Legged (2011), where he played the sweetest, zaniest, cutest kid who believed the earth was square! He followed it up with lead roles in the web drama series, We Broke Up (2015) and Love for a Thousand More (2016). We Broke up, co-starring label mate Sandara Park, did very well, becoming the 4th most viewed web-series of 2015 and earned him the ‘Best Actor Award’ at the 2015 K-Web Fest Awards.

Seungyoon was cast in a supporting role in the tvN hit production Prison Playbook (2017). His role as the kleptomanic repeat convict was much appreciated. He is currently filming for the upcoming MBC drama Kairos to be broadcast in October 2020. He has also guested in numerous Variety shows.

Seungyoon is popular stand-in Radio DJ not only due to his deep voice and soothing tone, but also due to his excellent MC-ing skills! Many guests have noted how comfortable he makes them feel, steering the conversation with just the right amount of curiosity and enthusiasm. His first special DJ stint was to fill for Tablo at MBC FM4U Dreaming Radio in 2013. What a memorable show that was ~ Mino & Seunghoon came by support him and his Yoon-notes are still so precious and thoughtful! He has done many more special DJ stints over the years at various stations like: KBS Cool FM Kiss the Radio, SBS Power FM Youngstreet Radio and MBC Idol Radio.
